Background of the Study: Palliative care is a specialized form of healthcare that focuses on providing relief from the symptoms, pain, and stress associated with terminal illness, aiming to improve the quality of life for patients in the final stages of life (Hughes & Robinson, 2023). In Kogi State, as in many parts of Nigeria, the need for effective palliative care is growing, with an increasing number of terminally ill patients requiring holistic care that addresses both physical and emotional needs (Ogundele & Adeyemi, 2024). Nurses are at the forefront of palliative care, providing not only medical support but also emotional and psychological counseling to patients and their families.
Nurse-led palliative care interventions include symptom management, end-of-life planning, counseling, and spiritual support, among other services. These interventions aim to alleviate suffering and enhance the comfort and dignity of patients as they approach the end of their lives (Oluwaseun et al., 2025). Studies have shown that when nurses lead these interventions, the patients' quality of life improves significantly, as they are more likely to receive personalized care that aligns with their preferences (Okafor et al., 2023). Despite the evidence supporting the benefits of nurse-led palliative care, there remains limited research on the impact of such interventions in Kogi State.
This study aims to assess the impact of nurse-led palliative care interventions on the quality of life among terminally ill patients in Kogi State, with a focus on pain management, emotional well-being, and overall satisfaction with care.
Statement of the Problem: The growing population of terminally ill patients in Kogi State highlights the urgent need for effective palliative care. While nurses are crucial in providing palliative care services, their specific role and the impact of their interventions on the quality of life of terminally ill patients in Kogi State remains underexplored. This study will examine the effectiveness of nurse-led palliative care interventions and their impact on improving the quality of life of patients in the final stages of life.
Objectives of the Study:
- To assess the impact of nurse-led palliative care interventions on the quality of life of terminally ill patients in Kogi State.
- To evaluate the role of nurses in managing pain and symptoms in terminally ill patients in Kogi State healthcare facilities.
- To examine the psychological and emotional support provided by nurses to terminally ill patients and their families in Kogi State.
Research Questions:
- How do nurse-led palliative care interventions impact the quality of life of terminally ill patients in Kogi State?
- What role do nurses play in pain and symptom management for terminally ill patients in Kogi State?
- How do nurses provide psychological and emotional support to terminally ill patients and their families in Kogi State?
Research Hypotheses:
- Nurse-led palliative care interventions significantly improve the quality of life of terminally ill patients in Kogi State.
- The effective management of pain and symptoms by nurses enhances the overall well-being of terminally ill patients in Kogi State.
- Nurse-led psychological and emotional support improves the coping mechanisms of both terminally ill patients and their families.
Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on terminally ill patients receiving nurse-led palliative care interventions in Kogi State healthcare facilities. Limitations include the difficulty in measuring subjective experiences of quality of life and the potential for response biases from patients or caregivers.

- Palliative care: A form of care focused on providing relief from the symptoms and suffering associated with terminal illnesses, with the goal of improving the quality of life.
- Nurse-led interventions: Health care interventions initiated and managed by nurses, particularly in the context of specialized care such as palliative care.
- Quality of life: A measure of an individual's well-being, encompassing physical, emotional, and social aspects of life, particularly in the context of terminal illness.
